few months ago I was alarmed enough to read a story about
four suicides occurred in the
ONCE. Three vendors of Asturias and one of Badajoz had hanged themselves in 6 months. One of them is Julio Hernandez, Pola de Lena (Asturias). His mother recounted the following to reporters Interviu: "My son is hanged, it was an accident! The day before he committed suicide, the coordinator was to talk to my child that to see what they did with it, not surrender. They are crooks, they know too well the pressure to which they are subject to the workers: I, in addition to being the mother of a depressed worker, I witnessed the pressures. " Another of the deceased is José María Fernández de Sama de Langreo (Asturias). His daughter recalled: "My father told me that punishing pressed, putting impediments to sell, he controlled the inspectors all the time and he was enslaved." ONCE Many workers have the pressures on the part of the company for sales of the coupons. In the last year has been downsized ONCE in about 900 jobs. Anybody would be afraid to lose their jobs in these conditions but think that it is workers with disabilities have many more difficulties to find a new job. These pressures could have produced these suicides as well as some cases of abortion as another worker explained ONCE:
"I was pregnant in 2005, but lost the baby a few months. She worked selling coupons on the street, but would not let me or sit down. I had all day to an inspector at me and scolded me for going to the bathroom, being pregnant! It was a horrible stress and ascribe my abortion at that pressure. I regret not having reported, but was gutted .... " ONCE Workers
tell as most companies are low in anxiety or depression. However
the company seems to recognize the problem
since it refuses to investigate the suicides and appears to have taken any further action. The oldest in the company point to the following causes: "The problem is not ONCE in itself, but disastrous managers who run it. The approach of providing protection for the blind has been lost, now are rejected because they are blind vendor profile! When I belonged to the Union of Independent Affiliates (UAI), denounce the situation of workers and the stress they were subjected. The suicides were coming. " CCOO has also condemned the withdrawal of 1000 ONCE kiosks that the company claims, is due to lower sales, but that causes the workers have to sell the coupons in the middle of the street even more precarious working conditions . In all this is also precarious wages to XIV signed
Convention under which people who have started working from October last year paid 30% less, ie 666 €. ONCE workers have already begun to react and that in recent months and there have been demonstrations
prepare yet more to come: demonstrated on April 14 to the general directions of the ONCE and in May to autonomous public agencies. In June they have organized a national mobilization. worries me as serious as this event is going largely unnoticed for most of the English. In my opinion, suicides France Telecom
have resonance in the English press that the case of ONCE. It is true that in France Telecom have been more appropriate but it seems very unfortunate that have to wait many more deaths to denounce something and do something about it. Do not forget that ONCE is a non-profit organization since its purpose is to help people with disabilities, it benefits from large state subsidies. It is alarming to see how the Government, so far, has ignored all this case where our French neighbors, as always, seem more diligent and are already taking matters into , including his own Sarkozy has intervened in this matter . not let these deaths be forgotten, we force receiving public subsidies for ONCE to take action so that nothing that happens again. This country does not need a labor reform, this country needs a CORPORATE REFORM!
